Stop Reckless Cuts that hurt developmentally disabled Rhode Islanders
Send a message to your state legislators: “Don’t balance the budget by hurting the most vulnerable Rhode Islanders.” In a late night session at the State House, approximately $24 million dollars in cuts to services for the developmentally disabled was included in this year’s state budget. Moreover these cuts will take $8 million dollars in federal dollars out of circulation in Rhode Island’s economy – which does not make sense at time of economic crisis.
Home Depot? Or the Homeless? Who does the RI General Assembly support?
Our budget is a statement of priorities that SHOULD reflect our values as a state. What does the General Assembly's budget tell us about their values? After caving to pressure from corporate lobbyists, the General Assembly protected tax loopholes for multi-state corporations that cost the state millions and balanced the budget on the backs of low and middle income families.
Remove the Corvese Amendment from the Civil Union bill!
Any day now the RI Senate could vote on civil union legislation that contains a dangerous and harmful amendment sponsored by anti-equality Representative Arthur Corvese. The Corvese Amendment would allow any religious-affiliated organization (including hospitals, cemeteries, day care centers and schools) to openly discriminate against civil union spouses. This means that a spouse could be denied the right to participate in a partner's medical care at hospitals like Our Lady of Fatima or St. Joseph's, even during an emergency.
Close Corporate Tax Loopholes, Create Jobs!
Multi-state corporations are legally avoiding paying taxes in our state by using accounting gimmicks to move there profits to tax shelters in low tax and no tax states like Delaware and Nevada, shifting the tax burden to working families and small businesses. Governor Chafee has proposed enacting combined reporting that will allow Rhode Island to close these corporate tax loopholes by requiring companies to pay taxes on based on the share of business they do in our state.
Say "NO!" to RIteCare Cuts!
The Providence Journal reported that state leaders are considering kicking 6,600 parents off of RIte Care health. These are families trying to get by on $33,000 a year or less for a family of three.Together, we can help make sure that thousands of families in Rhode Island continue to have the good health and peace of mind that come with good health insurance and care.
Bush Tax Cuts: 10 years later, where are the jobs?
On June 7, 2011 President George W. Bush signed a bill cutting taxes by $1.35 trillion over ten years. This would be the first of several tax cuts that Bush would sign, which would end up costing a total of two and a half trillion dollars over a decade. Here in Rhode Island our legislators pushed through similar tax breaks for the wealthy. The alternative flat tax cost the state over $100 million in lost revenue, and last year's tax personal income tax gave our state's top earners a 4.1% tax break.
