Last week Rep Maria Cimini introduced a groundbreaking piece of legislation to restore fairness to our income tax structure. Rep Cimini has proposed temporarily ending tax breaks for those making over $250,000 a year to help Rhode Island weather the financial crisis. Thirty-six members of the House lent their names in support of this common sense tax reform measure.

Are your legislators on board?

All across the country, the American people are calling on our elected officials to end the failed economic policies of the past and repeal tax breaks for our highest income earners so we can ensure a prosperous future for all of us!

Some of our legislators are listening and some of them aren't!

Find out if your elected officials are with the 1%  or you and ask for their support TODAY!

Happy New Year!

volunteerThis afternoon the Rhode Island General Assembly returns for the start of the 2012 legislative session and we can't help but be excited to kick off this election year!

As Iowans take to the caucuses tonight, we're reminded of the power voters hold in our democracy. It's our job to pay attention and hold our elected officials accountable - in the State House and at the polls.

We're gearing up for a big year in 2012 - with the opportunity to grow our grassroots neighborhood organizing teams and continue to advocate for tax justice measures that close corporate tax loopholes, end tax evasion by the super-rich, and bring some sanity back into our income tax structure.

Support Occupy Providence

Police across the nation are cracking down on Occupy Wall Street – and Providence may be next.

This morning, the New York Times included Mayor Angel Taveras’ vow to remove Occupy Providence from Burnside Park among the list of actions being taken to disperse protestors.

Tuesday night, police donned riot gear and sprayed tear gas and rubber bullets into the crowds at Occupy Oakland. In Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emmanuel’s police force arrested more than 300 peaceful protestors. All this follows the initial response to Occupy Wall St. in New York, where protestors were pepper sprayed, dragged to the pavement and brutally arrested for doing nothing at all.

These are the kinds of anti-democratic responses to free speech and assembly we saw during the Arab Spring – not what we expect in America and certainly not what we need in Rhode Island.

We implore Mayor Taveras to support the peaceful protests of Occupy Providence demonstrators, and ask that you sign the Occupy Providence petition here and join us TONIGHT to show your support.
